Elections in the DR congo

Its interesting that the catholic church is calling for an boycott of the elections (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/africa/5208876.stm) in DR congo (more info http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/africa/5168274.stm BBC is wonderful)this was going to be dodgy from the getgo, you have one president who has being since getting into power essentially a thug and a dictator who is using the state instruments and intimidation as a tool to get relected (he wasnt elected in the first place), you have all these candidates who are former warlords who have being fighting it out if one of them doesnt like the result we are back at square one.

With 19 out of the 33 candidates boycotting the elections these elections are going to be hardly representative but hey welcome western democracy! (minus boycotts). It is hardly representative (western democracy that is)its big parties with big backers (or guns in this case) and corporate and mining interests no doubt having a hand in this affair. Now this is sounding more like an old fashioned western democracy!.

I really do hope that these elections are fair and free and all parties accept the results, but watch this space we could be seeing the DR congo back in the news for all the wrong reasons AGAIN.As the BBC correspondent in the congo covering the election said “the united nations is going to need all the luck it can get to make sure that the elections run smoothly and without incident (or as close as possible).

I for one will be listening to this on the BBC world service,i hope that all the news is that the election went well, that someone got elected fairly NOT that the shit has hit the fan.I hope that they can get back on there feet for the sake of the people.

Yours truly

and oh here is some nice pictures once again from the BBC http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/in_pictures/5169350.stm
